"Echolocomotion" selected as Highly Commended by Sound of the Year Awards 2024
My composition Echolocomotion was selected as "Highly Commended" by Sound of the Year Awards 2024 in their “Composed with Sound” category. Echolocomotion is the soundtrack to a short experimental film of the same name, created in collaboration with Marseille-based American filmmaker and ethnographer Jeff Silva. The film is expected to premier sometime later in 2025.

I recorded soprano pipistrelle bats at the Site Archéologique de Tholon in September 2024, as part of my residency at the Tétrodon in Martigues, France. I created this composition by layering and processing these sounds using a variety of techniques in the studio: resonant analog filters, impulse response reverb, and a network of digital delays.
This piece's rhythms and structures recreate the excitement and mystery of tracking swarms of bats: squinting into the dark and waving an ultrasonic detector above your head until you are suddenly showered in clicks and squawks for a few minutes, before the bats just as quickly disappear to hunt somewhere else.
